Flat, Spring, Split, and Belleville Washers: What Each One Actually Does

Quick answer: Flat washers spread load, split/spring washers do far less anti-loosening work than most people assume, and Belleville washers provide genuine spring preload — here's the real function of each.

A flat washer (ISO 7089 / DIN 125 style) spreads clamping load over a wider area and protects the substrate surface — it does not lock a fastener against loosening. A spring/split lock washer (DIN 127 style) is widely believed to prevent loosening through spring tension, but independent engineering testing has repeatedly shown that once fully compressed under normal torque, it behaves close to a flat washer and provides limited genuine resistance to vibration-induced loosening. A Belleville (conical) disc washer is a true spring element, providing calculated preload and deflection that flat and split washers don't.

Flat washers: load spreading and surface protection

The main job of a flat washer is distributing the bolt or nut's clamping force over a larger contact area than the head or nut alone would cover, which matters on soft materials, slotted holes, or coated/painted surfaces that could be damaged or crushed by direct point loading. They come in standard, narrow, and wide (fender) patterns depending on how much bearing area is needed relative to the hole size.

Spring and split lock washers: real function is more limited than assumed

Split (helical spring) and internal/external tooth lock washers are specified expecting them to resist loosening the way a spring resists compression. In practice, once torqued to a normal clamp load, a split washer is fully flattened and no longer stores meaningful spring energy — the slight edge bite from a split or tooth washer contributes marginally, but it isn't a substitute for correct torque, thread-locking compound, or a genuine prevailing-torque nut on a vibration-prone joint. Treat them as a minor supplement, not a primary anti-loosening solution.

Belleville washers: genuine calibrated spring load

A Belleville washer is a conical disc spring — as it flattens under axial load it produces a predictable, calculable spring force, and washers can be stacked in series (for more deflection) or parallel (for more load) to tune the resulting preload curve. This makes them useful in joints where maintaining consistent clamp load through thermal expansion/contraction or gasket relaxation matters, such as flanged joints and some electrical or gasketed assemblies, in a way flat or split washers cannot replicate.
